IDEA #1KBBOA Synthetic Mucin Lubricants. 25A0029

Key Words: lubricant, friction, mucus, synthetic mucus, polymers Mucus is used throughout biology as a lubricant, including in the eye, gut, and vagina. We have created a synthetic mucus that mimics the salient structural details of natural mucus. In this work we study the lubricity on biologically relevant surfaces and show that our synthetic mucins are powerful lubricants. The utility of this material would be as a lubricant on biological surfaces. Examples of relevant biological/health applications where lubricants are needed include (1) dry eye disease, (2) sexual lubricants, (3) coatings for implants, and (4) joint/articular lubrication.
