We have made a new kind of refrigeration material with a greater than 10-fold more energy efficient ability to perform heat pumping than the vapor condensation refrigeration you are used to. The material is an elastocaloric material – it absorbs heat when you stretch it and gives in back off when you relax it. Our material is made of proteins – current elastocalorics are metal alloys that are expensive and contain toxic rare earth elements. Our material is completely non-toxic, moves heat with higher efficiency (joules of heat moved divided by work required) than these alloys, and can be stretched and relaxed billions of times without stretching. The latter quality is the most important improvement in this material space.
