In our prior work, we learned that large area, porous, water-impermeable membranes loaded with a photosensitizer are an effective and robust method for generating singlet oxygen when efficiently coupled to a LED light source. In this invention, we have developed a new design to leverage this knowledge and incorporate it into a low head oxygenator (LHO). The objective is to build a singlet oxygen generator (SOG) that will generate a large quantity of singlet oxygen and do so with high electrical efficiency while ensuring that the treated water is saturated with oxygen. The device includes a central LED light source with a heat dissipation system to ensure that that photosensitizer does not overheat.
