We claim to utilize water-responsive materials to construct horizontal rotary engines which can operate on bodies of water and harvest evaporation energy. The purpose of this invention is to generate rotary motion and electricity by utilizing evaporation energy. The power output of these engines is potentially comparable to that of state-of-the-art solar power plants, but the capital and operating cost of these engines is much lower. In addition, these engines are also easy to scale up for large scale applications.
In this invention, water-responsive materials are used in the engine where the linear motion of water-responsinve materials can be converted into rotary motion (see section E). When the engine is placed on any body of water, the engine’s rotary montion can be easliy converted into electricy by attaching an electromagnetic generator on top (see section D). By controlling the evaporation rate, the engine can deliever power on demand without using any batteries.
