IDEA #29ZAH4 Novel Ultrasonic Probe for Non-Destructive Testing in UHF Range

Novel Ultrasonic Probe for Non-Destructive Testing in UHF Range fabricated that are very essential Description technological processes of A novel design and key piezoelectric (probes) with operating transducers frequencies over 10MHz range for an ultrasonic system of non-destructive testing (NDT) have been proposed. The STM’s probe has been from high-Q piezoceramics and other special materials providing adequate characteristics for the emitting acoustic beam, and its further pickoff by a similar transducer. These probes have been designed to be easily integrated into widely- used ISQ systems of NDT. Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages The proposed original STM’s designs have notable particularities in structure of the piezoceramic resonator, its bonding, fixture, acoustic matching with damping and protecting layers, stainless housing with a piping for liquid supply for better operational characteristics of the probe as a whole. Detailed math models of finite-width acoustic beams in anisotropic and piezoelectric solids have been developed to choose rational design parameters. Areas of Application Ultrasonic NDT systems operating at high frequencies that provide higher resolutions of defects in the tested materials in respect to traditional low-frequency probes. The probes plan to be widely used for the NDT techniques like time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD). The techniques and technologies developed is also an analytical and technological cornerstone for development of phased-array probes and piezocomposites. Stage of Development Two generations of probes have been designed, fabricated and tested to meet specs of ISQ (Lisbon, Portugal) and its branches in more then 30 countries. The technological level of the STM Co. / ATSU design can be a base for organization of a middle-scale production. The probes could be also re-designed to meet more specific customer’s specs and/or for a further increasing of their operational frequency. Joint development of a phased array technology basing on piezocomposites has a special interest.
