IDEA #6JIX9F New Tool Of Ceramic Composites Based On Boride Armed By Directional Crystallizationx- And Gamma-Ray Detectors Made From Semiconductor Compound

NEW TOOL OOFF CERAMIC COMPOSITES BASED OONN BORIDE ARMED BBYY DIRECTIONAL CRYSTALLIZATION APPLIED RESEARCH • NEWMATERIALS RESEARCH Description Borides of f(cid:2) and d(cid:2) transition metals have high melting points, high harness, and a number of important functional proper(cid:2) ties. However, their intrinsic high brittleness hiders wide com(cid:2) mercial application of these materials in modern technique. Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages A processing method for zirconium dodecaboride single crys(cid:2) tals manufacturing has been developed. Cutting tools have been produced from the obtained single crystals and were successfully tested for cutting of titanium(cid:2)based alloys. The developed cutting tools exhibited sufficient increase of the cutting effectiveness, as well as the improvement of the resulting surface quality as compared to the cutting tools from artificial diamond. Such results are possible due to the lower interaction between the cutting tool and the machined materi(cid:2) als. Areas ooff Application Cutting tools for machining of titanium(cid:2)based alloys, glasses, etc. Fig.1 Internal stress in the surface layer of titanium(cid:2)based alloy(cid:2) after machining by different materials Fig.2 An edge tool manufactured from ZrB12 2 1 Fig.3 Swarf from artificial diamond (1), and by the developed cutting tool from ZrB12 (2) Stage ooff Development A processing method for abrasive and lapping discs has been developed. A processing method for zirconium dodecaboride single crystals has been developed. It is planned to develop a method of reinforcement of such single crystals with the simultaneous improvement of the reproducibility of the pro(cid:2) cessing method itself.
