METHOD OOFF PRODUCTION OOFF SPIRULINA BIOMASS
WITH ELEVATED CC(cid:2)(cid:2)PHYCOCYANIN CONTENT TTOO ENHANCE THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Description
LIFE SCIENCES • BIOLOGICALMATERIALS
Production of Spirulina biomass enriched with an
immunomodulator c(cid:2)phycocyanin administrates by the culti(cid:2)
vation of Spirulina platensis, strain G(cid:2)27. This mutant strain is
able to accumulate up to 36% of phycocyanin in dried biomass
while its parental strain contains no more that 15% of dried
biomass. The lack of thick polysaccharide sheath on G(cid:2)27 fil(cid:2)
aments and their enlarged length makes Spirulina biomass
harvest and the washing easier and more effective upon the
filtration through wire(cid:2)gauze. It was shown that the biomass of
G(cid:2)27 strain is not toxic. Model experiments have shown that
the feeding of the rats having experimental radiation lesion or
an anemia with G(cid:2)27 strain biomass led to significant correc(cid:2)
tion of both pathological processes.
Innovative Aspect and Main Advantages
A mutant of Spirilina platensis with genetically determined c(cid:2)
phycocyanin overproduction has been obtained. This feature
of mutant strain seems to be exceptionally stable during
recent 15 years.
The cultivation of G(cid:2)27 strain instead of its parental strain
leads to the increase c(cid:2)phycocyanin yield because of its high(cid:2)
er content in biomass as well as the optimization of the culti(cid:2)
vation conditions. The c(cid:2)phycocyanin content in G(cid:2)27 strain
biomass exceeds that index in a prototype strain up to 1.7(cid:2)2.9
folds under the same cultivation conditions.
G(cid:2)27 strain long trichomes (fivefold longer than that of proto(cid:2)
type strain) make the process of biomass collecting and wash(cid:2)
ing by means of filtering significantly easier.
Areas ooff Application
The Spirulina platensis strain G(cid:2)27 with enhanced content of
an immunomodulator c(cid:2)phycocyanin might be used for the
production of the health prophylactic food formulas and cos(cid:2)
metic stuff.
